The courage of Fatima bint Asad
Fatima is a beautiful name. We are all aware of at least one person who is called Fatima. I myself have a few friends by that name and my beloved mother is also called Fatima.
Fatima is also the name of one of the daughters of the Prophet (peace be upon him) who is also the wife and cousin of the Prophet (peace be upon him), Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah have mercy upon him) and the mother of the Prophet's grandsons whom are leaders of the youths of Paradise, Hasan and Hussain (may Allah have mercy upon him).
However, did you know that the wife of Abi Talib and mother of Ali (may Allah have mercy upon them all) was also called Fatima? There are also two other Fatimas in the family. Fatima bint Hamza bin Abdul Mutallib and Fatima bint Shaibah, who was the wife of Aqeel bin Abi Talib (may Allah have mercy upon them all).
This month we will discuss the courage of Fatima bint Asad (may Allah have mercy upon her). She was from the same lineage as the Prophet (peace be upon him) from the Hashimi dynasty. Fatima bint Asad bin Hashim bin Abd Munaf bin Qasi Hashmi. She was known for her intelligence and abilities from the beginning.
Besides Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah have mercy upon him), Fatima bint Asad had two other sons, Aqeel bin Abi Talib and the other of whom was the general Jaffar Tayar (may Allah have mercy upon him) who led and was martyred in the same battle of Mutah. She also raised the Prophet (peace be upon him) alongside her husband Abi Talib (may Allah have mercy upon him) as her own after his father, then mother passed away whilst he was very young. Then his grandfather Abdul Mutallib (may Allah have mercy upon him) also passed away. She was so caring that she even starved just to feed him in his infancy until he became a man.
Both Fatima and Abi Talib were fond of the Prophet (peace be upon him) due to his mannerism and cleanliness. Even when he became older, they were impressed, as whenever he was around, there was a blessing in the food he and the other children ate and more signs were witnessed when Abi Talib went onto a trip to Syria.
Fatima bint Asad (may Allah have mercy upon her) was amongst the first who courageously swore allegiance when the Prophet (peace be upon him) was given the Message of Islam to give amongst his kith and kin. She was kind and caring.
This was because Fatima bint Asad (may Allah have mercy upon him) believed in the Prophet (peace be upon him) and courageously supported Islam regardless of the torture she and others faced from Quraish, whom boycotted Abi Talib and his clan for three years. They were endowed with patience and fortitude and after ten years the siege ceased. The wife of the Prophet (peace be upon him) Khadijah passed away, followed by his uncle Abi Talib passed away. This year was known as the year of sorrow.
Fatima even had to part ways from her son Jafar and his wife Asma bint Omais (may Allah have mercy upon them), who led the first group who migrated to Absinniyah where the ruler Al Najaishi was tolerant and hospitable.
She was amongst the group who migrated to Madinah after it was ordered by Allah (The Most High) that the Prophet (peace be upon him) should go to Madinah. One day, the Prophet (peace be upon him) gave Ali an expensive sheet and asked him to divide it between the four Fatimahs. His wife, mother, sister-in-law and cousin.
She was so special to him that when she passed away he made a dua and used his shirt as part of the shroud. He prayed to Allah to forgive her and give her a dress of Paradise. He even went to examine her grave.
He said
'My dear mother, may Allah keep you under His protection. Many times you go hungry in order to feed me well. You fed me and clothed me in delicacies that you denied yourself. Allah will surely be happy with these actions of yours. And your intentions were sure to be meant to win the goodwill and pleasure of Allah and success in the Hereafter."
Subhanallah (Glory be to Allah), having the courage to support someone who many are against is a blessing. The patience and courage of Fatima bint Asad shined brightly throughout his life. Hold tight to who supports you.
