My attachment to islamic art
As I walk across the prayer hall in the mosques, the beauty of the Arabic letters that are carefully designed primarily in black with decorative motifs attracted my eyesight elaborating the words of the Holy Book of Quran that created me and you. The book whom I have profound love with where Allah (The Most High) converses with me in the beautiful language of Arabic.
Art is an unspoken language of emotions - the colours and techniques utilized to illustrate the line, texture and shape expresses one’s feelings. We observe and interpret each image differently. I enjoyed Art as a hobby from a very young age where I loved historical monuments, artefacts, buildings and drawing nature.
Calligraphy is defined as beautiful writing and my love for Arabic calligraphy was not overnight, it was part of my journey reviving my purpose in life. Today, Islamic calligraphy increases enthusiasm and appreciation it deserves in people around the world.
Each and every one of us had a testing moment in our lives. Some have several, some have many and others are continuous. It not only increases faith in Allah (The Most High) but also strengthens one’s character. My testing moment initiated when I was in college. I had an emergency operation where doctors and surgeons had to save my life, this followed by studying for my International Baccalaureate examinations whilst recovering at the age of 18. Allah loved me to the extent He invited me to see His beautiful house in Makkah to supplicate, worship and perform Umrah where I spent nearly a month in Saudi Arabia. A series of indescribable holy texts surrounding Makkah Al-Mukaramah by talented calligraphers – a major outlet of passion with creativity enlightened my heart as I performed Umrah.
A number of different styles were observed during my Umrah experience such as the Kufic, naskh, thuluth, taliq and diwani. The kufic script is composed of a square and pointed style and is characterized by its boldness and geometry. It is carved on metal or stone and can be used for mosque walls and coins. Naskh is the predominant lettering style utilized in Arabic countries. It consists of firm proportion and measurements for the letters to have an element of clearness and clarity. The Thuluth script are utilized on headings, titles and ornaments. On the other hand, the Diwani script is highly structured and is joined together unconventionally. Moreover, there is a Persian element in the Taliq script where the elegant writing is profoundly utilized in the Indian subcontinent, Afghanistan and Iran.
When I came back, my interest in charity work, Islamic art and making a difference initiated and were conducted during my personal time. My passion for art as a hobby transferred from drawing nature to Islamic calligraphy where I use a pen and learning how to do it the traditional way with the pen and ink to germinate the essence of Islamic calligraphy into different scripts primarily Naskh, Thuluth and Kufic.
Over the past twelve years, I conducted various projects such as Dhikr, quranic verses, names of Allah (The Highest), customised names, names of sahaba and female role models.
Always remember that in order to conduct a piece of art or any form of action itself – the passion needs to come within in order to develop sincerely. People may interpret my photography and artwork differently but each photo, image and script drawn has a meaning that only He alone knows. Last but not least, I am still trying to improve my calligraphy skills each time. Please accept my humble status
